booklets and narrated tours are available for you to discover
Providence’s
rich historic and architectural legacy. A favorite tour
is Benefit Street’s “Mile
of History” which features the most impressive original Colonial homes
in America. Beautifully restored houses, churches, and museums
overlook the city’s
historic waterfront.

Banner Trolley Tour
Relax on a 90-minute
trolley tour, or ride all day and get on and off at the
interesting stops along Providence’s “Historic
Banner Trail.”
The Banner Trail
is a walking trail that winds through the East Side, Capitol
Center and Downtown exploring Providence’s
history, architectural beauty and cultural innovation. Points
of interest are highlighted with colorful banners, information
centers, and exhibitions. The walking tour begins and ends
at Waterplace Park where most sites are within a mile radius.

Information Center in
the Convention Center, One Sabin Street, one block North
of the Biltmore.

Providence
Intown Churches Tour
A self-guided
walking tour of nine downtown churches. Providence is the
birthplace of religious freedom in the US. Visit to worship or marvel at
the rich architecture, art, and history. Pictured at left
is the First Baptist Meeting House Church, literally THE
FIRST Baptist Church in America, built in 1775. |

State House
Tours
82 Smith Street
Built between
1895 to 1904, the State House is an architectural
wonder modeled after the US Capitol Building in Washington,
D.C. It is the largest unsupported dome in America and the
fourth largest unsupported marble dome in the world after
St. Peter’s
in Rome. Atop the dome is the “Independent Man,” a
11-foot 500-pound gilded bronze statue, an icon honoring
Rhode Island’s
independent spirit. View original artwork in the gallery,
including the Gilbert
Stuart portrait of George Washington which was replicated
on the dollar bill. Guided tours are offered daily -- call
to schedule.

Providence City Hall
Kennedy Plaza (next door to Biltmore)
Built
in 1878, Providence City Hall is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. It was designed after
the Louvre and Tuileries Palaces, Paris. Tours are offered
by appointment only.

Waterplace
Park and River Walk
A four-acre
park in the heart of Providence, signage along the River
Walk tells of the city’s rise from colonial settlement to
the modern day and the changes of the Providence riverfront.
Several
times a year, this becomes the site of the spectacular “Waterfire”
exhibition, pictured at left. |
