Nationally, small establishments comprise an overwhelming majority
of the nation’s businesses. In 2016, 88.3 percent of the
establishments in the US had fewer than 20 workers. Establishments
employing between 20 and 99 workers accounted for 9.8 percent of
US establishments, and those employing over 100 workers accounted
for only 1.9 percent of establishments nationwide.
