Nationally, small establishments comprise
an overwhelming majority of the nation’s businesses. In 2008, the
latest year for which data are available
for all states, 88.1 percent of the establishments in the US had less
than 20 workers. Establishments
employing between 20 and 99 workers accounted for 10.0 percent of the US
establishments, and those employing over a
100 workers accounted for just 1.98 percent of establishments nationwide.
