Job Clubs

The Resource Center offers injured workers Job Clubs that are held on Mondays at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. The Job Club provides injured workers with an opportunity to discuss their job search, and get advice regarding interviews and job search strategies, with the vocational specialists in the Resource Center. Job leads are obtained from a variety of resources and made available to injured workers seeking employment. Injured workers are also invited to independently use the computers, phones and fax machine in the Resource Center to make their prospective employer contacts. New in 2007 – upgraded, state-of-the-art, brand new computers are now available in our Resource Center. Help is available with resume and cover letter preparation, and faxing and emailing employers. Please feel free to contact Cindy Baldwin at cbaldwin@dlt.ri.gov for more information.

NOTE: The Donley Center also offers a Spanish Job Club on Mondays at 10:00 am. All of the information offered in the Job-Seeking Skills Workshop is presented in Spanish. Additionally, job search support is offered to injured workers and can be provided with the help of an interpreter in most languages.

Injured Workers can also prepare for the GED exam by using our test preparation materials in the Resource Center. We offer the GED pre-test daily and can provide you with your results on the spot!

Computer Lab

The Donley Center is continuing to offer basic and intermediate computer classes to all RI injured workers. Classes consist of three weeks each of Microsoft Word and Excel. In addition, classes in Microsoft Outlook and Internet/Email are available, each in three-week sessions. Many adult students successfully completed this newly expanded program of classes in 2006 and 2007, which are offered again in 2008.

Basic Microsoft Word teaches students the basics of word processing such as creating and saving documents, and setting up files. Basic Microsoft Excel teaches students to create lists, spreadsheets, and other documents for recording and measuring data.

More advanced functions of creating and enhancing documents will be taught in Intermediate Word, including working with templates, tables, and graphics. Intermediate Excel will cover more advanced features of Excel, such as using formulas, working with templates, and creating business forms.

In the Internet class, students will learn how to use the Internet to search for information, such as job leads, and will be introduced to using email.

The Outlook class will teach students how to send/receive email and work with calendars, including scheduling appointments, setting up automatic appointment reminders, and other functions.

Classes are held from Mondays to Thursdays from 9 to 11 AM and 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, and Fridays from 9 to 11 AM. Students who have some computer knowledge are able to take Microsoft Excel first, but typically those with no computer experience should start with Microsoft Word.
