Benefits

The RI Department of Labor and Training oversees various benefit programs for Rhode Island workers and employers.

> Unemployment Insurance

Unemployment Insurance provides temporary and partial wage replacement to workers who have become unemployed through no fault of their own.

> Temporary Disability Insurance

Temporary Disability Insurance provides income support to cover workers unemployed due to non-work-related illness or injury.

> WorkShare

WorkShare provides employers an alternative to layoffs. Companies can avoid layoffs by reducing the work hours for a large group or its entire workforce. Workers become eligible for pro-rated unemployment benefits to make up for their lost wages.

> Workers' Compensation

Workers' Compensation monitors and records all claim filings to ensure that workers injured on the job receive proper payment from insurance companies. The Education Unit offers diverse Workers' Compensation-related seminars, while the Fraud and Compliance Unit investigates fraud and ensures that employers maintain proper coverage.

> Trade Adjustment Assistance

The Trade program is available to workers who lose their jobs or whose hours of work and wages are reduced as a result of increased imports. Under the Trade Act of 1974, workers adversely affected by increased imports may apply for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), which includes a variety of benefits and reemployment services to help unemployed workers prepare for and obtain suitable employment.
