The RI Department of Labor and Training web site now features an online mechanism for verifying workers' compensation insurance coverage.
Through a partnership with the National Council on Compensation Insurance, the department now links to a national database for workers' compensation coverage that can be searched by both employer name and Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN). To access this database, visit the workers' compensation portion of the Department of Labor and Training web site at http://www.dlt.ri.gov/wc/ and click on the “Find Coverage” button.
Assistant Director for Workers' Compensation Matthew Carey explains that this self-service verification is particularly convenient for medical providers, legal personnel and any other professionals involved in claims filing.
He adds that it can help any worker determine if his or her employer is currently providing workers' compensation insurance-a requirement for any Rhode Island business with one of more employees. A person who wishes to report non-compliance with state Workers' Compensation law may do so anonymously by calling the division's hot line at (401) 462-COMP. Businesses who fail to provide workers' compensation coverage may face penalties of up to $1,000 per day.
The RI Department of Labor and Training offers employment services,
educational services and economic opportunity to both individuals and
employers. DLT protects Rhode Island’s workforce by enforcing labor
laws, prevailing wage rates and workplace health and safety standards.
The department also provides temporary income support to unemployed
and temporarily disabled workers. For more information on the programs
and services available to all Rhode Islanders, please call the RI Department
of Labor and Training at (401) 462-8000 or visit the web site at www.dlt.ri.gov.
