CRANSTON -– As summer draws near and the school year draws to a close, Rhode
Island’s youth are poised to enter the work force in greater numbers. Federal
and State Labor Laws provide protection and provision for this potentially
vulnerable population.
Parents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with child labor laws, which
detail the type of work permitted for various age groups, hourly work limits,
and wage information. Safety of the children is paramount and these workers
should be employed in a safe environment and in most cases be protected by
Workers’ Compensation Insurance.
Parents, or employers, who wish to learn more about the Federal and State Labor
Laws are encouraged to call the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training’s
Education Unit at 462-8100, x1 or visit
www.dlt.ri.gov/ls/childlabor/htm.
