Multi-Employer Job Fair on Saturday

March 11, 2008

The Westerly-Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce and the RI Department of Labor and Training (DLT) are co-sponsoring a multi-employer job fair on Saturday, March 15 from 10 am to noon at the Westerly High School cafeteria, 25 Ward Ave., Westerly. Participating employers include Home Depot, Cable Components, Vibco, Foxwoods/MGM Grand, Waterford Hotel Group, Olean Center, RI Department of Environmental Management, Bob’s Discount Furniture, Mass Mutual, Staffing Source, Lia Sophia Jewelry and others. Warehouse, retail, customer service and seasonal recreation positions are available, as are salon services, call center representatives and financial service representatives. The job fair is free and open to the public. For more information, call 1-888-616-JOBS (5627).

Representatives from the DLT Employer Services Unit, who have been actively recruiting employers for this job fair, advise jobseekers to bring copies of their résumé and dress appropriately for an on-site interview.

DLT and the chamber have organizes this event in response to recent layoffs at several area companies, including Paragon, Bradford Dyeing, Darlington Fabrics and Charbert Mill. “We’ve partnered with DLT to address the needs of those affected by layoffs and assist area employers in their recruiting efforts,” explains Lisa Konicki, executive director of the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce. “It’s an ideal cooperative partnership because DLT has established connections with businesses and a history of excellent outreach.”

Interim Director of Labor and Training Sandra Powell adds, “It is important for Rhode Island’s economy that those affected by layoffs return to the workforce as quickly as possible. Job fairs like this are an expeditious and effective way to connect those jobseekers with employers.”

In Westerly, the DLT’s Rapid Response team has met with many employees affected by layoffs to offer assistance in filing Unemployment Insurance (UI) claims and to offer them job search assistance and other supports available through netWORKri One-Stop Career Centers. These centers are open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM, in West Warwick, Providence, Pawtucket and Woonsocket; a satellite office is also open 8:30 AM to 4 PM at 73 Valley Road, Middletown.
